Doing Business in Indonesia

Business in Indonesia is conducted either in English or Bahasa Indonesian. If you are
doing business in a larger city or with multinational corporations, English will more
likely be used. It is however wise to bring an interpreter. Businesses located in more
rural areas will find it difficult to conduct business in English.

Initial introductions in Indonesian business are formal. Handshakes are generally
exchanged before and after business meetings, but the grip is generally softer than
those used in the Western world. Greetings are occasionally accompanied by a slight
bow.

If you are being introduced to several people, it is customary to introduce yourself to
the eldest member of the group. It is acceptable to shake hands with women.

Negotiations can be quite lengthy as Indonesians like to give enough time to carefully
consider the business proposal. They do not like rush when conducting business.
Often it takes several meetings before coming to an agreement with your Indonesian
counterparts. Initial meetings generally serve to make acquaintances.

Business Etiquette (Do’s and Don’ts)

Have your business cards printed in English. If you know if you are working
with Chinese Indonesians, it is polite to have the reverse side printed in Chinese. If
you are working with ethnic Indonesians it is necessary to have the reverse side
translated into Bahasa Indonesian.

Have all academic qualifications and titles printed on the card. When handing
your card, offer it using the right hand or both hands.

Arrive on time to meetings, but as a general rule, do not expect your Indonesian
counterparts to do so. For Indonesians, time management is not a priority and little
effort is put into planning ahead.

Address your Indonesian business colleagues with the appropriate professional
title. When introducing yourself or handing a business card, include your title, as
people with more qualifications are held in higher regard.

Don't forget to take into consideration that Muslims pray five times a day when
scheduling business meetings with your Indonesian counterparts. Prayers usually
last fifteen minutes and time should be allocated for them.

Don't be afraid to recap what you have discussed in your meeting. It may be
necessary to explain yourself in a different way. Indonesians will never indicate if
they do not understand something so it is wise to summarise in order avoid any
misunderstandings.

Don't offer alcohol, leather, certain animal products or knives as gifts to your
Indonesian counterparts.

Hi Susanne, thanks for the interview! Please introduce yourself.

My name is Susanne Evens and I live in St. Louis, Missouri.

I was born in Aalen, Germany and moved to the US in 1992 for the second time and started my company AAA Translation in 1994. We offer foreign language translation & interpreting all over the world and also global consulting.

I have a dual degree in International Business and as a Foreign Language Correspondent. I currently serve as the President of St. Louis–Stuttgart Sister Cities, a not-for-profit organization; am on the board of the World Trade Center St. Louis, the German American Heritage Society of St. Louis, and the German American Committee.

I am also on the advisory board of Solar Power St. Louis; the BusinessWeek Alliance/Market Advisory Board; am a Council Member with the Gerson Lehrman Group and an Associate Member of United Succes.

My advice on global business development and communications has been featured on NPR, BusinessWeek.com, BrandChannel.com, Constantcontact.com, St. Louis Commerce Magazine, St. Louis Business Journal, and International Enterprise Singapore.

Why did you decide to move to the US?

My ex-husband is from St. Louis.

Did you have the chance to gain some US-related experience before you moved here?

Yes, I have always worked for multi-national companies as a translator.

How did your friends react when you told them that you were leaving Germany?

They were sad that I left but happy for the opportunities ahead.

Do you still have connections to Germany? Do you travel there occasionally?

Yes, through the Sister City relationship there is a lot going on between Stuttgart and St. Louis via student and business and cultural exchanges. St. Louis – Stuttgart celebrated their 50^th anniversary last year, and both Mayors and myself traveled to each other’s cities respectively.

I also still have a lot of friends in Germany dating back to elementary school!

How were the first months in the US, where there any problems, what went well?

When I first moved to the US in 1982, I spoke British English and we lived in Louisiana and couldn’t understand anybody! So I immersed myself deeply into that culture and learnt a few slang words along the way.

Do you have a green card or are you already an American citizen?

I became a US citizen in 2008, the proudest day of my life.

What did help you to settle down?

My background in languages and international business.

How would you rate your decision in retrospect?

The best decision I ever made as this still is the country of opportunity, but you have to work very hard at it.

Do you have specific ideas for the coming year?

Expand my business and create more business opportunities between Germany and the US.

Are there other things that you want to point out?

Being able to dip into the best of both worlds, i.e. born and educated in Germany and having learnt the American way of doing business, really helped me at getting established in this country. Some of the things I am able to do here, were not thought of in Germany back then, and, of course, vice versa. Some of the exciting things happening here can be applied in Germany. I really enjoy the best of both worlds.

There is a field of translation that is continuing to grow despite the economy - over-the-phone interpreting (OPI). WHY YOUR TRANSLATION/LOCALIZATION SERVICES PROVIDER MATTERS

When companies need translation services, many people will send out the same RFP to receive multiple bids, with presumably the same project/assignment parameters, and then decide to go with the least expensive bid. If selecting and implementing translation services were that easy, then all companies would successfully compete in the global marketplace. Unfortunately, choosing the right translation service is not that simple.

While the least expensive options are attractive to budget-minded companies, these less-experienced translation services often can develop problems that in turn create additional costs. As an experienced partner with many leading global companies, AAA Translation recommends these steps in choosing reputable and reliable translation services:

1 - Don't let translation be an afterthought. Is your company working with or selling to people for whom English is not their native language? Companies that completely recognize their target market and the value of a diverse audience budget sufficient time and financial resources towards their translation needs, whether they operate domestically or globally.

2 - Determine your translation needs. Once you’ve decided that your company needs translation services, determine what you’ll need translated. You’ll need to examine and learn more about the targeted audience. Just knowing they are Spanish-speaking isn't enough - are they Mexican Spanish speakers or Castilian Spanish speakers?
Take time to find out whether there are cultural differences or if your product name is offensive to the targeted language audience. As an example, one of IKEA's drinking glasses uses the style name "Svalka", which translates to "landfill" in Russian. Do you know the answers to these questions or could you use professional guidance in analyzing your project?
Find out whether your proposed project parameters and potential vendor solutions will include the proper translation methods and technology.

3 - Determine whether you will do it in-house or outsource it. Before you decide it will be more cost-effective to do it with someone in-house, find out whether this person is familiar with translation standards and what their ability level is with the target languages. Are you able to gauge that ability? Do they provide credentials to back up their experience claims?
Does this person have translating experience? Do they speak the dialect you need? For instance, this person speaks Brazilian Portuguese but your end product is going to be marketed in Portugal. Can this person offer the aforementioned best methods and technology to keep costs in check while being consistent in wording?
If your company decides to outsource the translations services, but you have no idea what kind of expense will be incurred and how much time your project will take, ask a professional translation service for a quote (see item #4 for what parameters you should include.)

4 - Determine at the onset what your agreed-upon specifications are with the translation vendor. At minimum, these specifications should include the target audience, specifics regarding the language(s) needed for translation, format in which the text will be provided and format in which it is expected to be returned, approximate word count and how additional sections will be handled, deadlines and investment price.

Word count deserves a special note of its own. 300 English words do not necessarily mean 300 words in other languages. Determine which word count will be used in determining price, and realize there might be up to 30% differential in those counts.

5 - Know that going with an unqualified translator can cost more, and may continue costing your company. In many instances, companies will realize that they've already paid an in-house employee to produce a badly translated set of materials, and then they must send the project to a professional translation resource, essentially paying for it twice.

Sometimes companies don’t realize translation mistakes have been made by their in-house employee, and the project goes out to the public with errors. Shoddy translations, at minimum, reflect badly on the company – not to mention the potential for lost revenue. Just ask Mead Johnson Nutritionals, who had to recall 4.6 million cans of baby formula because of flawed Spanish directions.

6 – Recognize the untapped potential that translation services can provide for your company. For many American companies, translations are always an afterthought, and rarely a budgeted item. In this country, particularly the Midwest, it’s not part of company’s protocol – but the potential for reaching a multi-lingual society can reap huge benefits and profits, whether the company operates worldwide or not.
The United States is quickly becoming a global melting pot, and Spanish-speaking consumers are the fastest growing segment in American society. Companies that market themselves and their products in multiple languages will eventually become the norm.

WHY YOUR TRANSLATIONS MATTER

When companies need translation services, many people will send out the same RFP to receive multiple bids, with presumably the same project/assignment parameters, and then decide to go with the least expensive bid. If selecting and implementing translation services were that easy, then all companies would successfully compete in the global marketplace. Unfortunately, choosing the right translation service is not that simple.

While the least expensive options are attractive to budget-minded companies, these less-experienced translation services often can develop problems that in turn create additional costs. As an experienced partner with many leading global companies, AAA Translation recommends these steps in choosing reputable and reliable translation services:

1 - Don't let translation be an afterthought. Is your company working with or selling to people for whom English is not their native language? Companies that completely recognize their target market and the value of a diverse audience budget sufficient time and financial resources towards their translation needs, whether they operate domestically or globally.

2 - Determine your translation needs. Once you’ve decided that your company needs translation services, determine what you’ll need translated. You’ll need to examine and learn more about the targeted audience. Just knowing they are Spanish-speaking isn't enough - are they Mexican Spanish speakers or Castilian Spanish speakers?
Take time to find out whether there are cultural differences or if your product name is offensive to the targeted language audience. As an example, one of IKEA's drinking glasses uses the style name "Svalka", which translates to "landfill" in Russian. Do you know the answers to these questions or could you use professional guidance in analyzing your project?
Find out whether your proposed project parameters and potential vendor solutions will include the proper translation methods and technology.

3- Determine whether you will do it in-house or outsource it. Before you decide it will be more cost-effective to do it with someone in-house, find out whether this person is familiar with translation standards and what their ability level is with the target languages. Are you able to gauge that ability? Do they provide credentials to back up their experience claims?
Does this person have translating experience? Do they speak the dialect you need? For instance, this person speaks Brazilian Portuguese but your end product is going to be marketed in Portugal. Can this person offer the aforementioned best methods and technology to keep costs in check while being consistent in wording?
If your company decides to outsource the translations services, but you have no idea what kind of expense will be incurred and how much time your project will take, ask a professional translation service for a quote (see item #4 for what parameters you should include.)

4 - Determine at the onset what your agreed-upon specifications are with the translation vendor. At minimum, these specifications should include the target audience, specifics regarding the language(s) needed for translation, format in which the text will be provided and format in which it is expected to be returned, approximate word count and how additional sections will be handled, deadlines and investment price.

Word count deserves a special note of its own. 300 English words do not necessarily mean 300 words in other languages. Determine which word count will be used in determining price, and realize there might be up to 30% differential in those counts.

5 - Know that going with an unqualified translator can cost more, and may continue costing your company. In many instances, companies will realize that they've already paid an in-house employee to produce a badly translated set of materials, and then they must send the project to a professional translation resource, essentially paying for it twice.

Sometimes companies don’t realize translation mistakes have been made by their in-house employee, and the project goes out to the public with errors. Shoddy translations, at minimum, reflect badly on the company – not to mention the potential for lost revenue. Just ask Mead Johnson Nutritionals, who had to recall 4.6 million cans of baby formula because of flawed Spanish directions.

6 – Recognize the untapped potential that translation services can provide for your company. For many American companies, translations are always an afterthought, and rarely a budgeted item. In this country, particularly the Midwest, it’s not part of company’s protocol – but the potential for reaching a multi-lingual society can reap huge benefits and profits, whether the company operates worldwide or not.
The United States is quickly becoming a global melting pot, and Spanish-speaking consumers are the fastest growing segment in American society. Companies that market themselves and their products in multiple languages will eventually become the norm.

There is a field of translation that is continuing to grow despite the economy - over-the-phone interpreting (OPI). Perhaps you have heard about it, and have wondered whether it might be a cost-effective way for your company to accomplish some of your international communications goals. In short - it is. But, for what projects is it effective, how difficult is it to set up, is it an adequate tool (or do things get "lost in translation,") and are the savings worth it?
First of all, how can your company use this technology effectively? OPI is not a substitute for having your materials translated. However, there are times that setting up an international meeting is simply not possible, much less cost-effective, yet simply sending an e-mail is not sufficient. Also, there are times when your clients or your vendors have questions and need more clarification than what has already been provided. OPI is also a great way to offer service to any multitude of your non-English-speaking clients without the expense of hiring a small interpreting army.

Once you have identified that OPI services would be helpful to your circumstances, isn't it a big headache to find someone who speaks the obscure language spoken in the country where your company produces widgets? Not if you know the right people - namely, us. Once you call and indicate your language needs, we send you a list of languages provided and a rate sheet. (The rates are the same for the 100+ languages offered, but are based on how many minutes used per month. As with everything, bulk minutes used equates to substantial discounts. Think twice before using a machine translator, unless you don't need new clients!

My daughter began college in 2002, exactly 10 years after we moved to America from Germany – when she still spoke fluent German and had a summer to learn English before school started in the fall. 10 years, apparently, is enough time to completely forget almost every bit of German she learned at such an early age. I, not realizing just how much of her native tongue she didn’t know anymore, tried to pressure her to take another language in college so that she could gain valuable knowledge of other cultures and languages. After the following events unfolded I was more than happy that she had decided to not grant my wishes, and to stick with German – the language she no longer knew best.

I believe it was her second semester of her freshman year; I get a frantic phone call… “Mom”! I need your help! My final paper is due tomorrow for German and I don’t think it’s saying what I want it to be saying. Are you really busy? Can I e-mail it to you and can you take a look?” Of course I said yes. 5 minutes later her paper was in my inbox ready to be proofread. Again, little did I realize how much she had forgotten… I called my daughter back and I asked her one simple question, “Have you forgotten everything of your German?” To which, as not only a mother - but also as the President of a translation company, I receive from my baby girl’s mouth the words I was fearing the most, “Well I used an online translator for the words I didn’t know.” I went silent – my own flesh and blood... “Mom? Are you still there?” Oh I was there. I was there trying not to scream at her about how ridiculous it was to use an online translation service to turn in a final paper that determined her final grade in the class, which could’ve caused her to fail that German class. But I digress. I got my wits about me and in my professional, calm voice explained to her why using an online translation service that has no clue about native slang, innuendo, homonyms, heteronyms, etc. is an absolutely terrible idea. After a few minutes of my speech she cut me off and simply asked me to help her.

The story of my daughter’s near misfortune with a failing paper is often times the actual story of an unfortunate company not investing the time and money into quality translators that are chosen for their native ability, educational credentials, etc. The ‘machine translator’ – as it is so dubbed in the translators’ inner circle, is just purely that: a machine. It doesn’t understand common native sayings such as, “I love this!” If that were to be translated into German the literal translation is, “I love it!” Which looks the same, yes; however, Germans don’t use the words Love and It in the same sentence, ever. The word Love in German is really only used when talking about an actual being. A native speaker would know this and would quickly be able to distinguish between the English meaning and translate it into the German version of saying that same statement. This goes a long way when trying to take your company global. Successful, globalized companies spend a lot of their time ensuring that their message is being clearly and correctly stated. Because, again, what means one thing in English doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing in Mandarin Chinese. After all, who can forget JFK’s faux pas of saying, “Ich bin ein Berliner!” Which literally means, “I’m a jelly donut!” not I’m a citizen of the city of Berlin (quotation from a June 26, 1963 speech by U.S. President John F. Kennedy in West Berlin, Germany).

Twitter’s march towards world domination continues apace. This morning comScore released its global numbers for March, 2009. Worldwide visitors to Twitter.com increased 95 percent in the month of March from 9.8 million to 19.1 million, according to its estimates. This compares to 9.3 million visitors in the U.S. alone.

These numbers only count visitors to Twitter’s Website, which is not the same as active users and also does not include people who interact with Twitter via desktop or mobile clients (a large portion of users). But the comScore numbers provide a good proxy for Twitter’s overall growth, which was helped recently by Ashton Kutcher’s race with CNN to one million followers, and Oprah’s subsequent adoption of the service.

If Twitter can keep this rate of growth up, it should cross 50 million visitors by summer.

"You need to speak your customer's language" also means that your web site should communicate to your customers in their language. The top ten translated languages on the web are Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, German, Korean, French, Italian, Russian, Portuguese and Arabic.

In the beginning, the world wide web was 75% English speaking; now only 25% of all web users are in North America.

Does your competition offer their web sites in other languages?
They may have found something worthwhile to pursue, particularly selling to the Hispanic Community in the US.

International web site visitors are three times more likely to explore a web site and make a purchase if the web site is provided in their native language (Forrester Research).

Most countries have their own versions of search engines. If you are in Germany and go online you would see Google Germany. If you want "doodad" to be found, then it would pay to also promote "doodad" in the top languages mentioned above.

A multilingual website and related marketing communication is a huge bonus to your company's image and branding. It shows cultural understanding, cleverness and above all a care for the customer. You want to be ahead of the curve.

Most companies conducting international business know how easily disconnects occur in written and spoken messages between individuals, teams, corporate divisions and clients. Culture and values differences affecting communication can be small or large, but their impact is often costly.

Do any of these scenarios seem familiar?

· You can sense you aren’t connecting with certain people on your international team and you don’t know why. You do know that better relationships will be critical to your success.

· The email traffic between two people/divisions tells you something isn’t working well in the relationship. You’re concerned that you need to step in before there’s real polarization.

Only 20% of all Internet users are in North America, and the weak U.S. Dollar turns American goods into affordable “Blue Light Specials” to international buyers. Now is the perfect time to go global online.

The fastest, easiest, least expensive way to take your products or services global is to expand your website to serve customers in other languages.

This past week I spent 4 days in Kansas City, Missouri at the 52nd Annual Sister Cities International Conference. It was the best conference ever and it gave our delegation from St. Louis a new outlook on what Sister Cities is all about. St. Louis - Stuttgart Sister Cities is thrilled to be part of this Citizen Diplomacy Network.

Our hearts went out to the individuals honored for saving babies in orphanages to a Japanese business man spending $1.2 Million Dollars over his life time in sending Japanese students to the United States for high school exchanges, to the president of the Moroccan Assocation of Sister Cities International bringing 25 young adults with him to Kansas City to attend the youth conference and paying for their way. What a difference we can make in young adults lives.

On July 14, 2008, two important international announcements happened in St. Louis.

The first one was the big story: The takeover of Anheuser Busch by InBev .

The second one was a visit by David Bohigian, the Assistant Secretary of Commerce. He announced that during the first half of 2007, out of 77 metropolitan areas, St. Louis was in 23^rd place in export growth. St. Louis exported 4.9 Billion Dollars! Among the top exports are chemicals, transportation equipment and agricultural goods.

In Singapore, topics that are acceptable to discuss are travel experiences, news of countries visited, and economic advances in Singapore. Topics to avoid in conversation include religion and politics. And never make humorous remarks about the food being served.

In Sweden, discussions may range over many different topics, but criticism of Swedish culture or politics should be avoided.

With 25 years of experience in the translation industry, Evens established AAA in 2000 and today offers translation and interpretation services in more than 100 languages.

Recently, Evens made AAA Translation more attractive to lawyers who receive mass quantities of foreign paperwork by introducing a new attorney document review service. This service provides lawyers with translators and interpreters who also are bilingual attorneys or legal assistants and have the ability to evaluate legal material to pinpoint what is important and needs to be translated, she said.
