Beyond Translation - When the words are correct, but they don’t connect

We have seen quite a few companies fold operations overseas due to communication issues. To help you save your overseas investment, we have teamed up with an international business psychologist and executive coach, and a cross-cultural/global management training firm:

Beyond Translation - When the Words are correct, but they don't connect

Most companies conducting international business know how easily disconnects occur in written and spoken messages between individuals, teams, corporate divisions and clients. Culture and values differences affecting communication can be small or large, but their impact is often costly.

Do any of these scenarios seem familiar?

· You can sense you aren’t connecting with certain people on your international team and you don’t know why. You do know that better relationships will be critical to your success.

· The email traffic between two people/divisions tells you something isn’t working well in the relationship. You’re concerned that you need to step in before there’s real polarization.

· Two international divisions in your company need to be working well together and instead they seem to blame each other for failures and not resolve issues. You know this is creating a negative culture and is costing you money.

· The culture of the overseas affiliate is too bureaucratic and formal. The business demands that the company be creative and agile. You need to create a combined culture that can better respond to your marketplace.

Often what’s getting in the way simply isn’t obvious. The words we’re using, no matter how carefully chosen or well intended, sometimes don’t have the desired effect and, at worst, can polarize a situation even more.

The solution lies in being able to decode the below conscious aspects of communication and adjust our written or spoken language, gestures, tone of voice, etc. to match the other’s internal map of the situation. This opens the door to deeper understanding and rapport. From this position we can easily predict what will motivate them, how they are likely to behave, and what we can say that is likely to be more influential and compelling.

Through seminars, online assessments and consultations, we can help your leaders:

· Learn to translate the deeper level of meaning and motivation in everyday written or spoken language

· Understand what’s making the difference between their successful and unsuccessful communications

· Determine the words or phrases to use and/or avoid in establishing trust, rapport and influence with colleagues and customers

· Become more flexible communicators across different situations and cultures

· Utilize assessments to predict – and resolve – potential communication challenges before they become a problem
