There is a field of translation that is continuing to grow despite the economy - over-the-phone interpreting (OPI). Perhaps you have heard about it, and have wondered whether it might be a cost-effective way for your company to accomplish some of your international communications goals. In short - it is. But, for what projects is it effective, how difficult is it to set up, is it an adequate tool (or do things get "lost in translation,") and are the savings worth it?
First of all, how can your company use this technology effectively? OPI is not a substitute for having your materials translated. However, there are times that setting up an international meeting is simply not possible, much less cost-effective, yet simply sending an e-mail is not sufficient. Also, there are times when your clients or your vendors have questions and need more clarification than what has already been provided. OPI is also a great way to offer service to any multitude of your non-English-speaking clients without the expense of hiring a small interpreting army.

Once you have identified that OPI services would be helpful to your circumstances, isn't it a big headache to find someone who speaks the obscure language spoken in the country where your company produces widgets? Not if you know the right people - namely, us. Once you call and indicate your language needs, we send you a list of languages provided and a rate sheet. (The rates are the same for the 100+ languages offered, but are based on how many minutes used per month. As with everything, bulk minutes used equates to substantial discounts. There is a one-time setup fee, but again, one fee regardless of how many languages you indicate.) You receive a toll-free phone number and a special access code.
